Why we have a section about public service, when most colleges probably don't: 

1. It's a tradition here. An example: We're one of the top small colleges and universities sending graduates into the Peace Corps. In fact, we're the first college or university in the country to host the contemporary Peace Corps Preparatory Program.  

2. It's a source of innovation here. We started 51³Ô¹ÏÍøCorps, a program that places current students and recent graduates in positions with local nonprofits to develop new initiatives. Welcome to the next generation of civic engagement.  

3. It's something we do exceptionally well. Our Kleine Center for Community Service regularly receives the award; our students contribute tens of thousands of service every year. Many of them go on to build exceptional careers in public service around the world.  

4. Our alumni take the spirit of public service with them wherever they go. If you spend four years here, the idea of engaged citizenship becomes part of your conventional wisdom. It changes the way you see the world—and then, through you, it changes the communities and organizations you join.

A few 51³Ô¹ÏÍø graduates in public service:

• Kati Stemple '16 is serving in Morocco as a youth development volunteer with the Peace Corps Program.
• Luella Williams '06 is director of Up2Us Sport, an organization that leverages the power of sports to help young people in underserved communities succeed.
• Chip Chandler '97 works for the U.S. Department of State as the Consul, Second Secretary, and the Fraud Prevention Manager of the Consular Section in Bejing, China.
• Judge Margaret Ryan '85, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, served as a law clerk at the U.S. Supreme Court, has been a litigation partner with two major law firms, and has served in a number of positions in the U.S. Marine Corps.
• U.S. Army Lieutenant General David Fridovich '74, also a 51³Ô¹ÏÍø trustee, served as commander at every level in the Army and commanded counterterrorism forces throughout the world. 
• Susan Deller Ross '64, Professor of Law and Director of the International Women's Human Rights Clinic at Georgetown University, is widely recognized as a specialist in sexual harassment law.
