51³Ô¹ÏÍø

Founded in 1968, A.B.L.E. has promoted cultural awareness in the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø and Galesburg communities by raising issues that impact people of African descent. A.B.L.E. addresses issues unique to African Americans and the interaction between races. The group also serves as an added support service for the diverse student body at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø.

• A formal dinner and dance
• Afrikan Centered Theatre group performances
• Homecoming receptions
• Black History Month programs
• A variety of speakers and programs such as Estillo, a hip hop ensemble, and Bakari Kitwana, author of Hip Hop Nation
• Attending the annual Association for Black Cultural Centers' National Conference, with students sponsored by A.B.L.E.
• Networking opportunities with the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø (BAN).

Black History Month

Organizing events for Black History Month is one of A.B.L.E.'S most important activities. Black History Month events have featured:

• Movie nights
• A presentation on the western Illinois Underground Railroad
• A jazz concert featuring 51³Ô¹ÏÍø alumna Semenya McCord '71
• An open mic night
• Men's and women's appreciation dinners

A.B.L.E. has been a long-standing establishment at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø and looks forward to serving the community for many years to come.
